The Divided Highway

We had listened with interest to the Grenadian cruiser-net on the VHF and had heard about various places being along the ‘ Divided Highway ' so I thought I'd check out some of these places – the MNIB which is the equivalent of a farmers' market store, Ace Hardware and Bulk Buy. We were just getting used to the heat so I set off early in the morning but realised as soon as I got ashore that I was still wearing flip-flops instead of walking sandals – oh well, too hot to be bothered to go back. So off I went along the road leading to the Divided Highway – half way along I noticed a pair of pretty red flip-flops which had been abandoned in the gutter – wonder who abandoned those?

Not too far to get to the roundabout and there it was - the Divided Highway in all it's glory – the only section of dual carriageway (allegedly) in Grenada . Off I trot along the road – passing the office of the MP for St Georges area next to the Mongolian restaurant next to the Best Rest mattress company next to the rubber tyres supplier etc etc (none of this “Fish Street” or “Butchers row” business) . Buses and taxis hooting as I go along – but I know from my previous experience not to let my ego get the better of me - we had been in a marina a day or so earlier and every time I passed one of the boats I heard a wolf whistle – did wonders for my ego – when I mentioned to Matt that the owner of said yacht must've been a builder he creased up laughing – didn't you notice the parrot in the cage? One deflated ego later………………

Eventually the XL plaza loomed into view and I'd arrived at the MNIB. Great selection of fruit and vegetables so I chose some satsumas, oranges and limes – got to the checkout to find out that the green things are not limes but they are satsumas, the limes are lemons and the oranges are limes! I did get some red tomatoes though! Got the rest of the shopping done along the other side of the Divided Highway, where Ace Hardware is next to the ‘Best USA Bagels in town' which is next to the Peugeot garage etc etc and made my way back to the boat.

A couple of hours after setting off, I was back on the road to the boat yard - I was very hot and sweaty and my feet were starting to hurt rather a lot. As I passed by the pretty red flip-flops I think I know why they were abandoned……perhaps someone who had been along the Divided Highway before me?

Back to Flotsam.....
