Blog & Photos - May 2010

1st - 7th May - The Fireball World Championships in Barbados. Lots of wind and big waves, but unfortunately some big holes in the wind as well.  From where we were anchored we had a great view of the windward mark and the first reach and the boys gave us some fabulous viewing - the standard of the top guys (which includes our boys), was amazing - most of them lapping the rest of the fleet within a couple of laps.  Matthew and Richard were consistently challenging for wins in every race and were lying 3rd overall all week, and so were in a great position at the start of the last day.  Although the championship was already won by the existing world champions the next 3 places were up for grabs and Matthew and Richard had set their sights on 2nd place.  They had had some great races with very close competition and, as spectators, we had been having palpitations it was so close!  Two races were scheduled for the last day and they did everything necessary to get the result they wanted - first around the windward mark - more palpitations!  Unfortunately on the reach they found a great hole which is very characteristic of Barbados and lost a few places so ended up in 6th place in that race.  The second race was then cancelled so they never had a chance to regain their position. Their overall result was 4th out of 70 boats -  which we all thought was excellent but they were bitterly disappointed after being so close.  Anyway well done boys!  The girls spent their time between helping the boys, cheering them on, snorkelling and swimming with turtles and both had a mini dive with Matt on the wrecks in Carlisle Bay.  Matt couldn't resist a sail in the fireball and impressed Richard with his old skills!

8th May - It was very hard to say goodbye to them all as they left to go back to the UK and the boat felt pretty deserted.

11th May - Set off for what we thought would be a great downwind sail to Bequia - however there was so little wind that day we ended up having a very rolly, slow sail - no fish either!

16th - 26th May - Pottered around the Grenadines before heading down to Carriacou and Grenada with not a lot to report.  Everywhere seemed pretty quiet.

27th May - Checked into Carriacou, caught up with friends and did a couple of dives and then headed down to Grenada.  Had a good haul on the way down - caught 2 Black fin Tuna and a booby!  Fortunately Matt was able to get the hook out of the booby's throat and it flew away but we'll never know whether it was able to feed or not.

28th May onwards - Getting ready to haul out before heading back to the UK in June for 'The Wedding'.
